C.    Target Language (Full Translation)

3.  Structural strategies in translation
There are three basic strategies that relate to the problem of structure, namely:

Addition

Addition here means giving more words in the target language. The addition is not an option, but a must.

Reduction

Reduction means using fewer words in the target language. As well as the addition, the reduction is not an option but a must.

Transposition

Transposition is a must, because without this strategy the meaning of the source language cannot be conveyed.  Transposition becomes a choice if it is conducted because of stylistic reason only. By using this strategy, the translator changes the original structure of the source language within the target language to achieve the equivalent effect. These conversions can be changing in the form of plural to singular, the position of adjectives, until the change of sentence structure as a whole. The separation of one sentence in the source language into two or more sentences in the target language, or the integration of two or more sentences of the source language into one sentence in target language is also include in this strategy.

Transposition can also be done because of language style or stylistic consideration.

    A.    Source Language

KPK rejects Sutan’s temporary
release proposal
Haeril Halim, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | National | Mon, March 09 2015, 6:21 AM
National News
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said Sunday it had rejected a temporary-release request filed by graft convict and Democratic Party cofounder Sutan Bhatoegana to attend his upcoming pretrial hearing at the South Jakarta District Court.

KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said the commission respected Sutan’s move to challenge his legal status through a pretrial mechanism, but would not allow the politician, who was locked up on Feb. 2, to leave the detention center for the week-long pretrial as requested by his team of lawyers. “Yes [it has been rejected]. To my knowledge, we have never approved such a request,” Priharsa told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
Separately, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Ade Irawan applauded the KPK’s firm stance on Sutan’s request, saying that “if such a request were approved then it would set a bad precedent for the KPK in the future.”

Ade blamed a recent pretrial ruling issued by the South Jakarta District Court invalidating the KPK’s naming of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan’s as a graft suspect as the main reason behind a recent flood of similar requests among graft suspects.

The court ruled that the KPK’s decision to name Budi a graft suspect was invalid, despite not a single article or clause in the country’s Criminal Law Procedures Code (KUHAP) giving it legal grounds to do so. The KUHAP merely stipulates that someone can challenge, through a pretrial mechanism, an arrest or a unilateral decision to halt an investigation by law enforcement agencies.

The KPK leadership has since accepted the ruling and decided to hand over Budi’s investigation to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), which intends to transfer the case to the National Police. This was done because the KPK is prohibited by its own law from halting a graft investigation. The KPK’s decision, however, has triggered public outcry.

“It is still important for the KPK to challenge the verdict to prevent more graft suspects from challenging their legal statuses in the future,” Ade said.

Graft suspect and former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali is one of those detained by the KPK who has filed a request challenging the commission’s move to name him a suspect in the loss of about Rp 1 trillion in state funds from the national haj program, which he oversaw between 2012-2013.

In addition to the case against Sutan, it was revealed during testimony delivered by graft convict and former Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas) head Rudi Rubiandini at the Jakarta Corruption Court last year that the multimillion-dollar bribes he received from a number of oil and gas companies were partly channeled to Sutan’s office, the House of Representatives Commission VII on energy.

The House payoffs allegedly included a 2013 demand from Sutan for US$200,000 as “holiday bonuses” for Commission VII lawmakers. Another $140,000 was paid to “ease” the deliberation of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry budget in 2013, which oversees SKKMigas — allegedly at the behest of former energy minister Jero Wacik, who is also a Democratic Party politician.

Due to his powerful position atop the energy ministry, Sutan also allegedly instructed Rudi to rig the bidding process for a lucrative multimillion-dollar oil project held by a local arm of US energy giant Chevron in which Edhie “Ibas” Baskoro, the youngest son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has also been implicated.

Brazil 'outraged' by Indonesia drug trafficking execution

Brazil says it is "outraged" by the execution of one its citizens in Indonesia for drug trafficking.
Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, 53, was arrested in 2003 after police at Jakarta airport found 13.4 kg of cocaine hidden in his hang glider.
Brazil says he was the first Brazilian national to be executed abroad and has warned it will damage relations.
Five other convicts from Indonesia, Malawi, Nigeria, Vietnam and the Netherlands, were executed on Sunday.
Convicted of drugs charges, they faced a firing squad in Central Java province shortly after midnight local time.
Five were executed on the island of Nusa Kambangan and the other one, a Vietnamese woman, was executed in the small central Javanese town of Boyolali.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said in a statement that she was "outraged and dismayed".
"Relations between the two countries have been affected," said Ms Rousseff.
"The Brazilian ambassador to Jakarta has been recalled for consultations," she added.
The Netherlands has also recalled its ambassador, after Foreign Minister Bert Koenders called the execution of Dutch citizen Ang Kiem Soe, 52, "an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity".
Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws. The country resumed executions in 2013 after an unofficial four-year moratorium.
The country's Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo said "hopefully, this will have a deterrent effect".
President Joko Widodo has said that he will show no mercy towards drug criminals because they have ruined the lives of so many.
'Another chance'
Ms Rousseff had made a plea for clemency on Friday, but it was rejected by Mr Widodo.
She told her Indonesian counterpart that she respected the sovereignty and judicial system of his country but as a mother and head of state she was making the appeal for humanitarian reasons.
Brazil says Mr Widodo said he understood the Brazilian president's concern but said he could not commute the sentence as the full legal process had been followed.
Human rights group Amnesty International urged the Indonesian government to halt executions immediately, and eventually abolish the death penalty.
Moreira said in a video recorded by a friend that he regretted trying to smuggle cocaine into Indonesia.
"I am aware that I committed a serious offence, but I believe I deserve another chance. Everyone makes mistakes."
A second Brazilian national, Rodrigo Muxfeldt Gularte, remains on death row in Indonesia, also convicted with drug trafficking offences.
Brazil abolished the death penalty in times of peace when it became a republic in 1889.
